George McClellan's grand scheme to
besiege and capture Richmond went
into reverse during a week-long series
of sharp battles covering an arch
above the Confederate capital's
northeast side.
The Army of Northern Virginia's new
commander, Robert E. Lee, asserted
himself and began building a
reputation for aggressive, imaginative
action that would characterize his
soldiers for much of the Civil War.
Our Seven Days tour highlights the
geographical and political framework
for the combat while visiting as many
of the preserved sites as possible. The
challenges for battlefield preservation
around Richmond are evident for any
participant.
