Criss-crossing the pastoral
Shenandoah Valley, Thomas J.
"Stonewall" Jackson  electrified the
South and terrified the North in the
spring of 1862 with a tour de force.
By eluding three separate Union
armies, Jackson  frustrated the
Union's schemes in two theaters of
war and etched his name in the
annals of military history.

During this widely ranging pilgrimage
through the "bread basket of the
Confederacy," Civil War Weekend
chronologically retraces the steps of
Jackson's foot cavalry through its
initial rebuff at Kernstown, then 'up'
the Valley and into the western
mountains at McDowell, back into the
Shenandoah Valley and across the
Massanutten range to Luray, Port
Royal and Winchester.

We conclude the tour by visiting the
site of Confederate cavalry chieftain
Turner Ashby's death near
Harrisonburg and the battles of
Cross Keys and Port Republic. You'll
see much of the lovely Shenandoah
Valley on this trip, which covers a
great deal of territory.
