Few other American communities
sustained the destruction that
visited Fredericksburg during
the Civil War.
Today, restored landmarks of
this historic town still display the
scars of battle. Our tour studies
action that occurred from
December 1862 during the
Battle of Fredericksburg to May
1864 and the Battle of
Spotsylvania.
Participants will stand in the
famous Sunken Road at
Fredericksburg and try to fathom
the courage and the
foolhardiness that dashed waves
of blue-clad soldiers against the
impregnable stone wall.
They will also trace the route of
Stonewall Jackson's dynamic
flank march and attack through
the early spring forest, and visit
the modest room at Guinea
Station where this light of a
nation's cause expired.
Contemporary military tactics
were rendered obsolete by the
impenetrable Wilderness,
shrouded in smoke and singed
by fire, where narrow roads,
overgrown lost fields and dusty
homesteads etched their names
in the American chronicle.
At Spotsylvania, military tactics
finally began adjusting to the
superior killing range of Civil
War weaponry. Here, in the
muddy trenches, a new, modern
sort of ugly warfare was coined.
