Across the bloody killing fields of
Cold Harbor, beyond the broad
expanse of the James River, the
Civil War's Eastern Theater
ground to a stalemate around the
Colonial city of Petersburg. U.S.
Grant and Robert E. Lee
conducted a months-long muddy
face-off in the trenches and
introduced a more modern, grim
form of warfare.

This trip encompasses
compelling sites such as Cold
Harbor, Grant's impressive
crossing of the James River, City
Point
, the Union's huge supply
depot that became one of the
world's busiest ports, and the
Crater -- scene of a uniquely
disastrous assault undone by
bureaucratic intransigence and
battlefield chaos.

We conclude the Petersburg
portion of the tour on Saturday at
the unmatched
Pamplin Historical
Park & the National Museum of
the Civil War Soldier.

For those wishing to continue
their journey with
Civil War
Weekend's
"Road to
Appomattox," we embark Sunday
through the rural Central Virginia
Piedmont, covering the final week
of combat for Lee's Army of
Northern Virginia and Grant's
Army of the Potomac.

From
Sutherland Station,
Namozine Church, Amelia Court
House
and Jetersville, to Sayler's
Creek, High Bridge, Cumberland
Church, Farmville and, finally,
Appomattox Court House
-- many
compelling and largely unknown
stories of the passing of the
war's most famous armies in April
1865 are revealed by this somber
journey through a beautiful and
unaffected part of the Old
Dominion.
