America's bloodiest day of internecine
combat, September 17, 1862, took
place on what has become the most
beautiful and peaceful national
battlefield park of all.

Much of the fields and farms that
withstood the Battle  of Antietam are
intact, providing a unique and
valuable opportunity for interpretation
by visitors.

Civil War Weekend sets up the
campaign that concluded at
Sharpsburg, Md., by first visiting the
preamble battlefields such as South
Mountain, Crampton's Gap and
historic Harper's Ferry.

The remainder of the tour is devoted
to walking Antietam battlefield and
seeing such places as the Dunker
Church, Miller's Cornfield, the East
and West Woods, Bloody Lane and
Burnside's Bridge.

Headquarters will be the
Clarion
Hotel, home of the 2000 Mideast
Peace Summit, in nearby
Shepherdstown, W.Va., a lovely
village filled with shops and
restaurants, with our banquet at the
Old South Mountain Inn in nearby
Boonesboro, Maryland.
